Deliberate Mistake | Ballet D’Jèrri

DIRECTOR, CAMERA AND Editor

1 x 5' for Yulia Makeyeva and Ballet d’Jèrri

’Deliberate Mistake’ was one of the first pieces commissioned by Ballet d’Jèrri.

Co-created by choreographer Asier Edeso Eguia and artist Yulia Makeyeva, with a haunting score by Ilia Osokin, the piece draws on Jersey’s knitting traditions as a metaphor for community, memory, and loss. Inspired by the idea of the ‘deliberate mistake’, an intentional flaw once used to identify drowned fishermen, it weaves together personal and collective fragility.

In the days leading up to the premiere, I captured material for a short documentary exploring the piece’s origins and creative process. I was struck by the imaginative use of yarn within the choreography, at times delicate and limp, then suddenly transforming into something muscular and commanding, as if the dancers were being bent and pulled by its rhythm.
