Since his directorial television debut which documented Ai Weiwei’s retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, Todd’s filmmaking acumen has garnered him a number of prestigious accolades.
Over the course of a decade, Todd has honed his expertise in the arts on screen whilst working with BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning production company Illuminations and during this partnership, Todd has made several critically-acclaimed documentaries for television alongside Producer John Wyver. Most recently, he was the Director of Photography and Editor for ‘Coventry Cathedral: Building for a New Britain’, described by the Telegraph as “BBC FOUR at its best.
Todd MacDonald is a filmmaker, director and editor who specialises in broadcast arts documentaries, theatre performance films, music promos and gallery exhibition media. His most notable works include films for BBC, Sky Arts, Royal Academy of Arts and Sir Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures. His work has also appeared at a range of international film festivals including London Short Film Festival, San Francisco Dance Film Festival and Le Festival International du Film sur l’Art.
Todd is highly experienced in and fascinated by representing the artistic process on screen and this has resulted in him becoming a close collaborator with some of the country’s leading Artistic Directors including Hofesh Shechter, Amit Lahav and Justin Audibert.
Throughout 2020-21, Todd spearheaded the launch of the Unicorn Theatre’s online digital platform, navigating a complex time where theatres had to adapt their live performances into engaging content that was accessible remotely. As Screen Director and Editor, Todd took the lead on the digital re-imagining of the Unicorn’s show ‘Anansi the Spider’ and devised a strategy for shooting the film entirely remotely under the restrictions of total lockdown. Partnered with The Guardian, the trilogy generated hundreds of thousands of views. In its five-star review of the piece, A Younger Theatre described the series, saying: “The infectious energy infused into every aspect of the story allows the performers to transcend the screen, delivering an unbeatably fun and fresh experience … it radiates pride and inclusivity.”
As a filmmaker, Todd sees himself as a self-shooting director and editor - meaning that he is comfortable and highly-skilled operating the camera, directing the shoot, or at the editing desk. With this ‘all-rounder’ specialisation, Todd is an asset to any project as he brings with him his intricate knowledge of each stage of the process to any role he is stepping into. His exquisite attention to detail coupled with his technical prowess has presented him with the opportunity to work on landmark projects with some of the most outstanding practitioners working in Britain right now.
