The Birth of Tragedy | Almeida Theatre
Director, Camera and Editor
In 2015 the Almeida Theatre set out a season of work to revive and redefine the stories of ancient Greece with three new adaptions of Oresteia, Bakkhai and Medea. Using Friedrich Nietzsche’s essay ‘The Birth of Tragedy’ as a stimulus for an artistic enquiry, how do the world views of the Apollonian and Dionysian combine together and exist apart? As their filmmaker in residence for the season, I spoke to the Writers, Directors and Actors responsible for these productions in an effort to understand why Nietzsche believed that the delicate balance between these two viewpoints was fundamental to art.
